Sinclair Broadcasting president David Smith has indicated that his controversial decision to reject high-definition television and use his new digital channels for "multicasting" instead was an easy choice. Smith told Sunday's Baltimore Sun that the costs inherent in converting to HDTV would have been "staggering," and, besides, "I'm not going to get any more money from the car dealer on the corner because I have a prettier picture." Sinclair also told the newspaper that multicasting will allow his company to pull money away from the cable industry for subscription -- i.e., pay -- programming. "This will clearly be a great business opportunity," he said.
