Synopsis: A shy boy receives a dog as his gift from his parents for his ninth birthday, since he can't make any friends in Yazoo City, Mississippi in 1942. He names him Skip, which becomes well known and loved throughout the community and enriches the life of the boy, Willie, as he grows into manhood.

Comment: Based on Willie Morris' memoir of his youth, focuses on a 9-year-old boy and his pet in a small Mississippi town during World War II.
