Synopsis: A heroic Roman general learns from his dying emperor, Marcus Aurelius, that the emperor wants to pass over his son Commodus upon his death and have Maximus installed as emperor. However, Marcus Aurelius dies before these wishes can be executed and Commodus promptly orders Maximus's execution. Maximus flees, eventually encountering a slave trader who trains him to be a fearsome gladiator. Maximus' renown as a gladiator is brought to Rome where he must ultimately fight Commodus in the Colosseum.

Comment: Budgeted upwards of $80 million.
