Synopsis:
Before Night Falls is based on the memoirs of exiled Cuban novelist and poet, Reinaldo Arenas. One of the most celebrated of contemporary Cuban writers, Arenas won a National Book Award for his first novel at the age of twenty. It was his only book to be published in his own country. Arenas' life as an artist, intellectual and homosexual in post revolutionary Cuba was a horror of censorship and persecution, forcing him to smuggle the manuscripts of his short stories, poems and eight other novels out of the country to be published abroad. The first Cuban writer to publish without permission from the government, his work was confiscated and he was sent to prison. In 1980, he was allowed to leave at last for New York, where he lived in exile until his death from AIDS in 1990. “Before Night Falls" was published posthumously in 1993.
