Synopsis:
A pilot crash-lands in the African desert just before the outbreak of World War II. With his face hideously disfigured by the accident, he is shuttled to a Tuscan monastery where a pretty Canadian tends lovingly tends him. Her kindness nourishes, but he remains an enigmatic figure. As the war proceeds, others come to the hospice, including a morphine addict. All are curious about the enigmatic English patient, and ultimately draw out of him his strange and curious tale, revealing that he is not an Englishman, but rather, a Hungarian who makes maps of uncharted areas. His opens up when a young English couple comes to the monastery, and he is attracted to the blonde, beautiful wife. Stranded together in the desert, they begin a passionate, if mutually self-destructive love affair left alone in the Sahara to endure the final, ultimate doom of their attraction
