Synopsis: Earl, a redneck man in his 60s from the Deep South, is bowled over when he learns that his late mother was black. Troubled and curious about his racial identity, Earl heads to Chicago in search of his half-brother, an African American. When he finds the man he discovers that he is a cop. Especially upsetting for Earl, he finds that the man wants nothing to do with him. With his head reeling from his unsettling family discovery, Earl is easy prey for street thugs. Badly beaten, with his pride and self-esteem hurting, Earl goes to his brother for help, and the two begin a tentative relationship as Earl recuperates from his wounds.
