Synopsis: The Viet Nam war is told through the eyes of a Vietnamese woman whose turbulent lifelong odyssey began in the paddy fields of central Vietnam. Raped by the Viet Cong, she flees to Saigon and begins a harrowing life and becomes pregnant by her rich employer. Moving again, she joins her sister, who has been reduced to working as a hooker. She finally begins a relationship with a U.S. soldier who wants to marry her. After the nightmare of dealing with immigration red tape, she finds suburban life is also distressing. Ultimately, she adapts to American ways and succeeds, but her success has ruined her traditional marriage. Once again, her survival powers are sorely tested.
