Synopsis: Forty-five years in the lives of a prominent South American family are detailed in this multi-generational saga beginning in 1926 when a young man struggles to become worthy of the beautiful patrician woman he wishes to marry. Unfortunately, she dies a mysterious death, causing her younger sister to become mute. The young man rises to become the most powerful rancher in the area, and, after 20 years, the younger sister speaks when she sees him again. They marry, but their union is fractured by the oddities of the family, as well as his own wild past. Eventually, he heads up the conservative government, but is pitted against a former childhood friend who is the leader of the peasant uprising.
