Synopsis: A country boy dreams of transcending his roots by following his dreams to become a university teacher. His path to knowledge and personal betterment is challenged by a series of difficult romances, including a brief marriage to an Australian woman, who deserts him. Turned down by the nearby university, and further imperiled when another woman he loves (who happens to be his cousin) marries his mentor, he feels defeated by life. Distraught, he returns to his provincial town. Alas, the romantic sparks remain, and when his cousin ends her unhappy marriage, the two move in together, flouting the religious and social conventions of the time.
