Synopsis: A young man, Tom, is mistaken for a wealthy, ex-Princeton graduate by the grad's wealthy father who sends Tom to Italy to covertly convince his wayward son to return home. Once there, Tom sees the folly of his mission - Dickie is having too much fun dabbling with a pretty fiancé, as well as numerous locals - so he decides to milk the old man's money for an extended stay. Spurned by Dickie when he makes a homosexual advance, Tom unwittingly kills him and assumes his identity to avoid prosecution, which leads him down a further treacherous path.

Comment: Based on a book by British mystery writer Patricia Highsmith about a man who changes his identity to pursue a new life. On the promise of helping a wealthy american retrieve his son from europe, a young con artists goes to Italy, murders the son, and assumes his identity, and his wealth.
