Whatever It Takes is another teen-oriented film being scorned by critics. Chris Hewitt in the St. Paul Pioneer Press (and syndicated by Knight Ridder) writes: "There's a movie opening today that is so indistinctive I can barely remember the name of it." Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times notes that, according to the credits, the movie is "loosely based on Cyrano de Bergerac." Comments Ebert: "My guess is, it's based on the Cliff Notes for Cyrano, studied only long enough to rip off the scene where Cyrano hides in the bushes and whispers lines for his friend to repeat to the beautiful Roxanne." And Jack Mathews in the New York Daily News also remarks on the vaunted source of the film: "The romantic fable of Cyrano de Bergerac gets another contemporary hearing, minus the long nose, in David Raynr's (sic) Whatever It Takes, a teen comedy so stupid that a long nose -- perhaps with a red bulb on it -- actually would have helped."
