SO, HOW ENGLISH WAS ENGLISH PATIENT

Although the British press was today (Wednesday) hailing the triumph of The English Patient, several writers were pointing out that there was little that was English (or British) about it beyond its director and top stars. "In truth, there is no British film industry," the London Times' Geoff Brown wrote in today's edition. "The English Patient proves it. To make a film of this magnitude, the director, Anthony Minghella, and his other winners had to embrace an American producer, Saul Zaentz, and journey abroad." The London Daily Telegraph observed that "British finance houses should be regretting the fact that they did not invest in The English Patient." The newspaper suggested, however, that the British film industry will receive a "shot in the arm" in May when the National Lottery is expected to provide over $261 million to set up four "mini-studios."
