ABC has mounted three strong nights in a row against its rivals, making one of its best consecutive showings in recent years. On Friday night, Barbara Walters' swan song on ABC's 20/20 -- an interview with Mary Kay LeTourneau, the teacher who had an affair with her sixth-grade pupil -- posted the highest ratings of the night, a 7.6 rating and a 14 share. Although the network placed third for the night with a 5.4/10, it was less than a ratings point away from the leader, CBS, which averaged a 6.3/11. On Saturday, a screening of the Tom Hanks feature Castaway won the night for ABC with an average 4.7/9, beating second-place CBS, which averaged a 4.5/8. On Sunday, after performing unimpressively in the 7:00 hour with America's Funniest Home Videos, ABC roared back to win the 8:00 hour, as it scored an 8.4/13 with the first hour of a two-hour Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. CBS placed second with a rather weak showing for the Mel Gibson-produced baseball drama Clubhouse, which pulled a 6.1/10, while the season premiere of American Dreams on NBC posted a 5.6/9. ABC continued to hold on to first place at 9:00 with the second hour of Extreme Makeover, which increased its numbers to a 10.9/16, while CBS placed second with the made-for-TV movie Revenge of the Middle-Aged Woman, starring Christine Lahti. The second part of the CBS movie won the 10:00 hour with a 10.3/17, but ABC's new Wife Swap performed solidly with a 7.3/12, winning the hour among the 18-49-year-old demo.
