Nearly half the owners of HDTV sets are unable to receive programs in high-definition because they do not subscribe to HDTV packages from their cable providers, according to a study by Forrester Research for the Best Buy consumer electronics stores. In a statement, Best Buy said Thursday that while the study indicated that one in three consumers are interested in installing a home entertainment system, they are confused about how it actually works. The retailers say their clerks ("Blue Shirts") have been instructed on how to prepare customers for the transition to HDTV.


CBS LOCAL STATIONS CONVERTING NEWS CAMERAS TO HDTV

CBS will begin converting its local news operations to high definition at each of its 17 owned-and-operated stations beginning in March, the company said today (Thursday). In a statement, CBS said that its Boston and Chicago stations will begin employing Sony's high-definition SDCAM Professional Disc system in March and that the remaining stations will begin converting to the Sony system throughout this year and next. Despite continued slow acceptance of high-definition cable packages, ESPN exec Bryan Burns indicated Monday that the cable sports network plans to vastly expand its HD productions in 2006, offering some 600 programs in the format.
