BUBBLE POPS
Monday, January 30 2006
|
Steven Soderbergh's Bubble, which debuted simultaneously in theaters, on high-definition pay-per-view and DVD, drew small audiences in the 32 art houses where it played. It grossed just $72,000, according to distributor Magnolia Pictures. However, Mark Cuban, whose Magnolia Films company distributed Bubble and whose Landmark Theaters comprised most of those screening it, told today's (Monday) Wall Street Journal that about 500,000 people paid to see it on HDNet Movies and that DVD orders were strong. "There is no question our total revenues exceeded what we had forecast had this been a traditional release," Cuban told the newspaper. "Plus we saved on the second round of promotion and advertising to promote the DVD release. We can't wait for our next [simultaneous] release."
