CHINA MAY BAN MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III

There was more bad news today (Monday) for the producers of Mission: Impossible III as the Shanghai newspaper Xinmin Evening News reported that the movie may not be given an import license that would allow it to be screened in China. Although numerous scenes were shot in Shanghai, the newspaper indicated that authorities were upset at the filmmakers for "tarnishing the image" of the city by showing scenes of rags and underwear drying on side streets and depicting police as bumbling.

broadcast
watchdog,
Daily
Variety
reported
today
(Wednesday)
that
henceforth
movies
and
TV
shows
featuring
live
humans
together
with
animated
figures
are
banned
in
China.
The
trade
publication
cited
a
report
appearing
in
the
government-operated
Xinhua
News
Agency
that
referred
to
an
order
by
the
State
Administration
of
Radio,
Film
and
Television
issued
on
Feb.
15.
The
order
stated
that
"human
live-action,
so-called
animation

Sony
Pictures
has
confirmed
that
it
has
been
notified
by
the
Chinese
government
that
a
planned
Feb.
9
release
of
Memoirs
of
a
Geisha
has
been
canceled,
the
New
York
Times
reported
today
(Wednesday).
The
State
Administration
of
Radio,
Film
and
Television
reportedly
gave
no
explanation,
but
numerous
earlier
reports
had
indicated
that
authorities
were
concerned
about
possible
protests
over
some
of
China's
top
actresses
appearing
in
Japanese
roles
in
the
movie.
