Both principal entertainment trade publications featured articles today (Tuesday) indicating that the major film studios are preparing for the possibility of strikes by the Writers Guild of America (WGA), the Directors Guild of America (DGA), and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG). Efforts to stockpile projects in anticipation of a strike spiked location filming in Los Angeles in the second quarter by 21 percent, according to Film L.A., the group that acts as a one-stop clearing house for film permits. In its report on the matter, the Hollywood Reporter observed, "Anecdotal evidence suggested that the studios have been hurrying film projects into production, ordering extra episodes of hit TV shows and developing reality programming to be used in case a strike interrupts production." But Writers Guild spokesman Charles Slocum told Daily Variety: "Stockpiling is an unnecessary disruption by studios of the production economy. ... It's never altered the course of negotiations. We remain ready to seek a reasonable deal at the bargaining table."
