APPLE UPGRADES IPHONES TO HOLD MORE MOVIES

In an apparent effort to make more room for "rented" movies downloaded from Disney's iTunes online store, Apple has expanded the storage capacity of its iPhone and the iPod Touch. The Touch now provides a maximum of 32 GB on select models; the iPhone will offer as much as 16 GB. Announcement of the product enhancements failed to impress Wall Street, where Apple closed Tuesday's trading down nearly 2 percent. Nevertheless, in early trading today (Wednesday), Apple shares had recovered most of their losses.

Apple
has
begun
receiving
numerous
complaints
that
movies
that
were
recently
made
available
for
rent
on
its
iTunes
store
can
not
be
viewed
on
iPods
that
were
purchased
before
September
2007.
Many
complained
that
Apple
posted
no
notice
of
the
limitation
when
the
movie
rentals
became
available
and
that
they
did
not
learn
of
the
restriction
until
after
they
had
rented
a
movie.
Apple
did
not
immediately
respond
to
the
complaints.

Each
of
the
major
studios
has
agreed
to
provide
movies
for
Apple's
iTunes
movie
rental
service,
Apple
chief
Steve
Jobs
announced
at
the
MacWorld
conference
in
San
Francisco
Tuesday.
The
inclusion
of
Universal
and
Sony
were
major
surprises
since
each
had
indicated
it
would
launch
a
similar
service.
Moreover,
Jobs
said,
the
films
could
be
downloaded
and
viewed
on
ordinary
or
high-definition
TV
sets
via
Apple's
settop
box
--
without
the
use
of
a
computer.
