SAG, AMPTP HAVE TALKS ABOUT TALKS
Thursday, March 13 2008

In an apparent effort to bring a degree of normalcy back to the movie and TV businesses, which are still operating in crisis mode in anticipation of a possible strike by the Screen Actors Guild, the industry's chief negotiator has proposed that contract negotiations with SAG begin on March 31. Nick Counter, president of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, reportedly made the offer to begin early negotiations -- the contract with the actors' union doesn't expire until June 30 -- during a meeting with union representatives at SAG headquarters on Wednesday, according to an spokesman for the AMPTP. A SAG spokesman later said that union leaders who met with Counter would consult with their board about the proposal for early talks. Meanwhile, Sony Pictures Entertainment Vice Chairman Jeff Black told the ShoWest conference in Las Vegas Wednesday that "it's not a foregone conclusion" that the studios will be able to conclude a deal with SAG before the June expiration date.
