MALAYSIA, SINGAPORE JOIN TO HALT PIRATES

Law-enforcement authorities in Singapore have joined up with those in Malaysia in a crackdown on Malaysian movie pirates who deliver bootleg DVDs to Singaporean customers across the Causeway that connects the two countries. (A minimum order of 20 discs is required for each delivery.) According to the Singapore Straits-Times, a Chinese man driving a car registered in Malaysia was arrested last Thursday as he attempted to cross into Singapore with 300 pirated DVDs. Two days later Malaysian authorities raided four retail outlets where they arrested three men and seized 4,000 pirated discs. One of the outlets had been running a website offering Singaporeans bootleg DVDs. The website was shut down. In a statement, Mike Ellis, president of the Asian-Pacific office of the MPAA;, praised the action of the Singapore and Malaysian governments, saying that it demonstrated their "commitment in taking aggressive actions in clamping down on pirate syndicates."
