Some film critics are administering a hard blow to the solar plexus of first-time movie director Hype Williams for his new movie Belly. Lawrence Van Gelder in the New York Times writes that in the film, "A mountain of style buries a molehill of wishful thinking, [glamorizing] the fruits of casual killings and outlaw life: gleaming cars, complaisant women and piles of cash." Rita Kempley in the Washington Post comments that "the story line is stale, the dialogue sometimes incomprehensible and the filmmaker's tack ultimately hypocritical." But Kevin Thomas in the Los Angeles Times finds that while Belly "has all the sex and violence of the urban black action genre, ... it builds refreshingly and unexpectedly to a spirit of redemption and responsibility. Unforunately," he adds, "Belly is highly uneven." |
