Of about half a dozen new releases this weekend, the film getting the best reviews is the one least likely to become a commercial success. Jonathan Foreman in the New York Post calls Such a Long Journey, which was filmed in Bombay and stars the celebrated Indian actor Roshan Seth, "a lovely, multilayered film, wonderfully acted and intelligently written." Stephen Hunter in the Washington Post remarks: "Works like this are few and rare. ... The movie is quite an experience." Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times calls it "a film so rich in atmosphere it makes Western films look pale and underpopulated." But A.O. Scott in the New York Times concludes that too much is crammed into the movie's plot. It "sometimes feels as crowded as the Bombay streets on which it was so beautifully filmed," he writes. |
