Most reviewers are finding little to love about The Love Letter -- male reviewers, at any rate. Many of them are being just plain catty about this film, which is produced by and stars Kate Capshaw. Rod Dreher in the New York Post is critical of the casting of Blythe Danner as Capshaw's mother. "Hel-lo! There's only 10 years difference in their ages. Dame Spielberg, 45, is a lovely woman, but why didn't someone point out to her that she, too, is old enough to be Gwyneth Paltrow's mother -- and looks it?" And Jay Carr in the Boston Globe: "When an aging actor appears with a young female co-star, we call it vanity -- a double standard. But Blythe Danner as Capshaw's mom -- what do you call that?" The film is being released as an alternative to Star Wars: Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. Taking note of that fact, Terry Lawson writes in the Detroit Free Press: "Calling The Love Letter a chick flick is like calling Darth Maul a bad guy; they might as well put a sign on the door that says 'No boys allowed.'" But Carrie Rickey in the Philadelphia Inquirer finds The Love Letter "the movie equivalent of a beach book: Sultry, sexy, summery." |
