Credit the producers of Drop Dead Gorgeous for sticking with that title, despite the obvious fact that it could turn out to be ammunition for the critics. "Gorgeous: It Gets Ugly" is the headline over Rita Kempley's review in today's Washington Post. The almost identical headline, "Gorgeous Gets Ugly," appears above Jonathan Foreman's in the New York Post. (Foreman calls the film "crude and witless ... a series of sour misfires.") And the headline over Gary Thompson's piece in the Philadelphia Daily News reads "Well, They Got the 'Drop Dead' Part Right." Still, the film does receive a handful of positive notices, albeit somewhat lefthanded. For example, Philip Wuntch comments in today's Dallas Morning News: "It's a typically nasty contemporary screen comedy, only better than most. Beneath its mean-spiritedness is a sharp-clawed wit." And Susan Wloszczyna, in USA TODAY, describes the film as "deceptively congenial." |
