By and large, the Austin Powers sequel is nabbing groovy reviews. although many critics insist it doesn't top or even equal the original. Janet Maslin in the New York Times writes that while the movie is "several love beads short of its predecessor," it nonetheless remains "a crafty, intermittently hilarious comedy." Rita Kempley in the Washington Post cheers, "Yeaaaah, baby! Dreams do come true. ... With its outrageous double-entendre, gonzo performances and appalling lack of restraint, the sequel is more than a guilty pleasure." Jay Carr in the Boston Globe observes, "For once, here's a sequel that hasn't been buried underneath its increased budget, but has some fun with it." But the film does receive some strong assaults from reviewers who seem to have been recruited by the dark side -- oops! wrong picture -- by Dr. Evil. Rod Dreher in the New York Post writes that "like teenage sex and Rolling Stones tours, it turns out that anticipating the new Austin Powers movie is a lot more fun than actually experiencing it." He suggests that the film merely milks the original premise "like a classic overlong Saturday Night Live skit." And Liam Lacey in the Toronto Globe & Mail echoes that view: "Though Austin Powers II probably won't rate as the biggest disappointment of the summer (even in this category, The Phantom Menace takes the superlatives) the movie is a case of déjà vu over and over again," he writes.
