Ten Things I Hate About You does to Shakespeare what Clueless did to Jane Austen, with, according to most critics, about the same result. "This is one teen film that is wise enough to span generations in its appeal," writes Kevin Thomas in the Los Angeles Times about this variation of Taming of the Shrew. Stephen Hunter in the Washington Post headlines his review: "10 Things I Really Like About 10 Things I Hate About You." including (No. 10): ""Someone, somewhere, will read The Taming of the Shrew because of it." But Susan Wloszczyna in USA Today includes in her review "10 things I dislike about 10 Things," topped by "How all the teachers are rude idiots just like the kids." Stephen Holden in the New York Times finds 10 Things "very clever for a teenage film," but "it also feels terribly forced." However, Chris Vognar in the Dallas Morning News figures that, unlike Shakespeare, this is a movie not to be taken very seriously. The film, he says, is "genial, pretty hip, sometimes funny and fairly harmless. ... Its stereotypes are colorful though contrived, which is about the best you can hope for in this season of teen discontent.
