Critics are, by and large, comparing the latest version of The Thomas Crown affair favorably with the 1968 original. "The temperature is several degrees higher in the remake," MSNBC critic Joe Leydon observes. Curiously, several reviewers comment on how 30 years of inflation have affected the plot. Leydon notes that in the original, Steve McQueen's Thomas Crown netted $3 million in his heist. Pierce Brosnan's Crown steals a $100 million Monet and is a billionaire to boot. Joe Morgenstern in today's Wall Street Journal calls the film a "techno-fiscal romance" and notes in particular that "one update absolutely won me over. In the original, Thomas Crown is seen reading The Wall Street Journal as he sits on his terrace. In the remake, Catherine sits on his terrace scrutinizing something on the cover of our Weekend Journal. As far as I can see, it's one of my reviews." |
