Movies with a rock-and-roll theme have seldom, if ever, been welcomed by either critics or audiences. Detroit Rock City is no exception. Consider this take on the movie from the New York Post's Rod Dreher: "It's another lousy entry in this summer's moron-a-thon celebrating teenage-male cloddishness. And this tribute to the devotion KISS fans have to the massively untalented rock band doesn't even have the wit to offer guilty pleasure, however crude. It's loud, lame and painfully obvious, so at least it's true to KISS's music." Observing that the film is R rated, Chris Vognar in the Dallas Morning News comments that it "is a celebration of adolescent stupidity, tagged with the restricted rating that keeps 'em out of the theater. Even those who oppose any form of cultural censorship will have to wince at the hypocrisy." |
