If audiences react to the Steve Martin-Eddie Murphy comedy Bowfinger the way critics have, its filmmakers could be taking many bows after this weekend. Superlatives overflow. Joel Siegel on ABC's Good Morning America concluded his comments about the movie by remarking, "This is one of the best comedy scripts I've ever seen. I'm ready to call it a comedy classic." Jonathan Foreman in the New York Post says that "it assures Murphy's comeback." Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times doles out equal praise for Murphy's performance (in two roles) and Martin's script. "Bowfinger is one of those comedies where everything works," he writes. "Where the premise is not just a hook but the staring point for a story that keeps developing and revealing new surprises." Likewise Janet Maslin in the New York Times calls Bowfinger "a coup for Steve Martin, who wrote the screenplay with obvious affection for all that he lampoons here." But not all critics are so full of praise. Jay Carr in the Boston Globe writes that Bowfinger "makes you wish Martin had run the script through his word processor a few more times. It could have been a lot funnier." |
