Runaway Bride, which reunite's Pretty Woman's Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, is opening to mostly tepid reviews. Janet Maslin in the New York Times writes that while the comedy may be "easy on the eyes and dependable in the laugh department," it also "shows signs of strain ... a largely mechanical romp." Carrie Rickey, in the Philadelphia Inquirer, while calling the film "diverting," also comments that it's "as substantial as a piece of wedding cake. Issues of commitment and identity that we call premarital jitters and would seem to be the film's subject are not weighed as carefully here as the relative merits of chiffon and tulle." Rita Kempley in the Washington Post isn't disposed toward writing off the movie completely, either, concluding, "Fans of Gere and Roberts may not care about the movie's many implausibilities and other shortcomings because the stars do indeed sparkle like the bubbles in wedding champagne. But the rest of us will find the vintage too sweet." Rod Dreher in the New York Post gives the film the most left-handed of compliments: "Runaway Bride is a runaway bore, but there are worse ways to waste two hours on a hot summer day than hanging out with Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. ... The movie stands out this dreadful summer for its sweet, old-fashioned (not to say hokey) sensibility."
