By contrast Bernardo Bertolucci is being showered with critical praise for his latest film, Besieged, originally made for Italian TV on a modest budget in just 28 days. "Besieged is an emotional gem," writes Jack Mathews in the New York Daily News. "What an unexpected gift!" marvels Rick Groen in the Toronto Star. Noting that there is little dialogue in the film, Rod Dreher in the New York Post comments, "Bertolucci shows us how elegantly expressive silence can be." Gene Seymour advises his Newsday readers: "With so many movies around that insult your intelligence and spell things out in big block letters, you owe yourself a rare chance to see a master filmmaker bring you into the storytelling process and give both your mind and heart a workout." |
