Reviews don't come much worse than those for Little Nicky, in which Adam Sandler plays a resident of Hell who ventures forth in New York. Joe Morgenstern in the Wall Street Journal writes that when the movie ended, "I felt like a cross-eyed voyeur who'd spent 87 minutes in purgatory and hadn't been purged, only pummeled. ... By comparison, The Wedding Singer ... is up there with Wilde and Shaw." Referring to an anal rape scene (the victim is Hitler dressed as a French maid), Rita Kempley in the Washington Post commented: "If there is a Hell -- and after Little Nicky there can be little doubt -- the members of the ratings board better be shopping for asbestos underpants. They must be in league with the Devil to have rated Adam Sandler's smutty new farce a PG-13." Gary Thompson in the Philadelphia Daily News shoots this arrow at the movie: "Adam Sandler goes to hell in Little Nicky, and you have to wonder if his career will follow." And Jami Bernard in the New York Daily News remarks that the film serves to remind you "what hell might look like -- a place where Adam Sandler movies are on a continuous loop." Mike Clark in USA Today notes that none of the criticism of the film probably makes any difference because Adam Sandler movies always open at No. 1 at the box office. "That said, let's note that as the end credits rolled at my screening, the groans were even louder than Sandler usually gets." |
