Twentieth Century Fox presents a film directed by Adrian Lyne. Written by Alvin Sargent and William Broyles Jr, based on a script by Claude Chabrol. Running time: 123 minutes. Rated R (for sexuality, partial nudity, language and a scene of violence).

Two new releases are not expected to present much of a challenge to Spider-Man this weekend. Nevertheless, one of them, Adrian Lyne's Unfaithful, starring Diane Lane and Richard Gere, is receiving some outstanding reviews. Joe Morgenstern in the Wall Street Journal calls it "a tale of adultery for adults, meticulously crafted and beautifully performed." Kenneth Turan in the Los Angeles Times comments: "Though it is difficult to take Unfaithful as seriously as it takes itself, on its own terms it's quite well done." The performances of the two stars are being especially applauded: "These two are romantic movie actors in an old and new sense," writes Michael Wilmington in the Chicago Tribune. "They can be mysterious and glamorous on screen and also ferociously intimate. Here, they give naked performances, emotionally stripped even when they have all their clothes on." The film evokes several faithless responses, however. "In the end, Unfaithful leaves you dispirited and grumpy," Stephen Hunter concludes in the Washington Post. Likewise, Steven Rea in the Philadelphia Inquirer ends his review by remarking: Unfaithful doesn't get much deeper than a romance novel."
