Several critics -- all male -- are reacting to Goldie Hawn and Susan Sarandon's never-grow-old characters in The Banger Sisters with embarrassment. Wesley Morris comments in the Boston Globe: "Sarandon has been outspoken for years on the subject of actresses still being sexually vital and commercially viable even while experiencing hot flashes. But is something called The Banger Sisters really where one takes a belief like that? You don't cringe at the sight of Sarandon and Hawn tarted up ... because they're not hot. You cringe because it's ridiculous. The folks responsible for it, though, smell fabulousness. I smell a fear of 50." On the other hand, the movie is receiving numerous cheers -- with female critics in the front line. Writes Carrie Rickey in the Philadelphia Inquirer: "Banger is a zeitgeist-defining movie, a cultural yardstick that measures where women are and where they used to be. ... Hawn and Sarandon (both 56) are arguably the first women in American popular culture to be pushing 60 and sexy." |
