Critics are devoting a good portion of their reviews of Twilight (which refers to the "twilight years") to how well Paul Newman has aged. Karen Hershenson, writing for the Knight Ridder Newspapers, says that Newman's presence in the film is so "leaden" and "world weary" that he "actually sucks energy out of the movie." "Aging stars," Rita Kempley writes in the Washington Post, "never lose their sparkle. Paul Newman, alas, comes mighty close in Twilight." But Thelma Adams in the New York Post writes that Newman "glows" in the movie. "The actor is in complete charge," she says. Los Angeles Times critic Kenneth Turan, who concludes that the movie itself "comes up lacking in both energy and plot," nevertheless finds that Newman "brings the perfect been-around quality" to his character. "His ability to be a hero even in repose remains unimpaired," Turan writes. Philip Wuntch in the Dallas Morning News, who finds Twilight "mellow yet mesmerizing" finds Newman equally so. "Few actors ... have aged so gracefully," he says. Likewise Steven Rea in the Philadelphia Inquirer concludes that Newman's star "is burning brighter than ever" in this "solid, satisfying mystery." Janet Maslin in the New York Times also finds the film "a class act" and concludes that Newman "still has the wisecracking vigor and panache that have always shaped his screen roles."
