George Clooney, who encountered a barrage of flak from critics for last year's Batman and Robin, is receiving much praise for his suave, Cary Grant-like performance in Steve Soderbergh's Out of Sight. Clooney is the most impressive he's been on film," writes Stephen Hunter in today's (Friday) Washington Post. Philip Wuntch in the Dallas Morning News agrees, saying that Clooney displays "an unforced charm" and "proves conclusively that he can carry a movie." "For the first time," New York Daily News critic Dave Kehr writes, "Soderbergh makes Clooney look like a movie star, rather than a transplanted TV actor." Critics also lavish high praise on co-star Jennifer Lopez. The actress, comments Kenneth Turan in The Los Angeles Times, uses her role "to solidify her position as a woman you can confidently build a film around." The pair together receive even bigger plaudits. "These two sultry stars take an intricate Elmore Leonard crime tale and give it steam heat," writes Janet Maslin in the New York Times. Echoes Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times: "These two have the kind of unforced fun in their scenes together that reminds you of Bogart and Bacall." |
