A Simple Plan appears to be one of those counter-programming films devised to pull in audiences who may be put off by the usually mindless holiday-film fare. Janet Maslin in the New York Times observes, "When you get the shivers watching this wintry tale unfold, it won't be from the cold." Jonathan Foreman in the New York Post describes the performances by the leads as "riveting" but adds that they are "the kind that can only be inspired by a first-rate script. And [Scott B] Smith's screenplay is coherent, believable and thematically satisfying in a way that is all too rare today." Jay Carr in the Boston Globe praises A Simple Plan as "the holiday movie season's sleeper. It's a starkly powerful, beautifully controlled, terrifically acted morality fable." Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times puts the movie on his list of the year's best. And Joe Morgenstern in the Wall Street Journal concludes, "Far from simple, A Simple Plan is often mesmerizing." |
