The reaction of critics to The Waterboy apparently is mostly hinged to their take on its star, Adam Sandler. Rita Kempley in the Washington Post, who has become one of his ardent rooters, describes the movie as "the Perrier of dumb-and-dumber movies, an effervescent idiot's delight that burbles from the wellspring of silliness inside star Adam Sandler's head." Susan Wloszczyna in USA comments that Sandler's character isn't much more than Sandler's Happy Gilmore with a Cajun accent, "but you'll laugh I 'gar-ron-tee' it." But Joan Anderson in the Boston Globe says that while Sandler "may help us get in touch with our inner frat boys," there is little "to redeem the cruel and offensive humor at the heart of this film." And, concludes Thelma Adams in the New York Post: "Root canal. Jury duty. The Waterboy. Adam Sandler's latest comedy is pure pain." |
