Critics, for the most part, are simply wild about the performance of Stephen Frye in the title role of Wilde, opening in limited release. Janet Maslin in the New York Times writes that "Fry's warmly sympathetic performance finds the gentleness beneath the wit. He conveys the sense of a man at the mercy of forces he cannot control, not least of them his own brittle genius." "Frye is glorious as Wilde," writes Jami Bernard in the New York Daily News. And, says Kevin Thomas in the Los Angeles Times: "Wilde has found a perfect Oscar in the formidably talented Stephen Fry." |
