Kevin Thomas in the Los Angeles Times minces no words in describing Krippendorf's Tribe. It is, he says, "arguably the worst movie ever to come out of Disney." Thomas particularly objects to scenes set in Africa that revive "all those old demeaning racist stereotypes in the most horrible ways." One hundred eighty degrees away from Thomas is Marshall Fine, writing for Gannett News Service/USA Today, "This surprisingly enjoyable piece of piffle is pure Disney all the way," Fine writes, "replete with a wholly preposterous plot, engaging performances and a feel-good, lesson-teaching ending." Lawrence Van Gelder in the New York Times agrees that the film "maintains a focused plot, keeps its characters in character, uses its imagination and disdains dumb, irrelevant jokes." But Jay Carr in the Boston Globe calls the movie, "an inept farce that strains after sentiment and comedy and achieves neither." "An awkward mix of family farce and mildly raunchy adult humor," is the description of Stephen Rea in the Boston Globe. "This feeble farce feels fatally forced," writes Michael Medved in the New York Post, resorting, fatally, to feeble, forced alliteration. |
