Jane Austen's Mafia -- the former title -- may have been about the funniest thing about the latest Jim Abrahams spoof, judging from the reviews, but the title was shortened to Mafia just prior to its release. Mike Clark, in his review of the film in USA Today, observes that the "test-audience brain trust that mandates the content and presentation of so many movies just didn't get [the title]." Jay Carr in the Boston Globe says that the movie "makes you an offer you can refuse," presenting a couple of inspired sight gags that "alone relieve the tedious plot and unfunny crudeness" of the movie as a whole. Peter Goddard in the Toronto Star recalls hearing a member of the audience tell a radio interviewer that he thought the movie was garbage. Comments Goddard, "I know good garbage, and Mafia isn't it." |
