The 13th Floor is experiencing a lot of ups and downs with critics. Susan Stark in the Detroit News writes that she had the sense that director Josef Rusnak, who co-wrote the film, "never quite made up his mind whether he wanted to make a profound picture about the dangerous arrogance of modern science or a good, old-fashioned modern American cinematic head trip." Bob Longino in the Atlanta Journal Constitution says that the plot is "a tad more ludicrous than shocking" and, in the end, "simply goes haywire." Roger Ebert agrees, noting: "This is a marvelous film right up until its inappropriate ending leaves you feeling betrayed." But Chris Vognar in the Dallas Morning News concludes: "The 13th Floor has a soul firmly rooted in sci-fi's moral ambiguity. It's nowhere near as flashy or violent as The Matrix, thus it won't do the same kind of box office. As consolation, it does say more about who we are, where we've been and where we might be going. |
