The writers of Lethal Weapon IV are getting a pasting from many critics today. Of all the weapons displayed on screen, writes Stephen Hunter in the Washington Post, "the most lethal weapon of all turns out to be the script." "Here Comes Lethal Dialogue 4" headlines Liam Lacey's review in the Toronto Globe and Mail. Thelma Adams in the New York Post refers to director Richard Donner's "merry movie of mass destruction" where countless items "disappear into that ravenous fireball that is the script." As if to explain it all, the Los Angeles Times' Kenneth Turan comments, "What becomes obvious is that all things verbal are intended only to mark time until the next stunt." Nevertheless, Janet Maslin in the New York Times calls Lethal Weapon 4 "one of the nicer blow-'em-ups around" and "a flamboyant, tongue-in-cheek adventure fueled by jokey camaraderie and constant forward motion." |
