Two Girls and a Guy marks Robert Downey's first movie appearance since he was released from jail after serving time for drug-related offenses, and several critics are taking note of that fact in their reviews: Writes Janet Maslin in the New York Times: "When actors fall into tabloid hell, their careers too often are already on the skids. But Downey ... proves again here that he is professionally speaking, at the height of his powers." Thelma Adams in the New York Post remarks, "As for Downey, he's no role model, but this jailbird can act. He energizes an economical movie that's contemporary, funny, hot -- and packs an emotional punch." And Beth Pinsker in the Dallas Morning News figures that "oddly enough, the ongoing saga of Mr. Downey's addictions and jail time make this twisted psychological exploration a better movie." Rita Kempley in the Washington Post praises it as "an edgy, gabby, salaciously subversive sex farce." But Eleanor Ringel in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution likens the film to "the worst off-off-off-Broadway play ever made" and concludes: "Now we know what drove poor Robert Downey Jr. into a drug-abuse relapse. It was making this movie." |
