Stephen Hunter in today's (Friday) Washington Post uses one word to describe The Mod Squad that pretty well sums up the reaction of most other reviewers to it: It "stinks," he says. Other critics use somewhat longer descriptions: "A film of unusual ineptitude," pontificates Lawrence Van Gelder in the New York Times. "Catastrophically crummy," writes Rod Dreher in the New York Post. "Laughably stupid," comments Glenn Whipp in the Los Angeles Daily News. "Hollow, shallow and altogether awful," are the adjectives that Ed Barks whips up for his review of the movie in the Dallas Morning News. Liam Lacey in the Toronto Globe & Mail calls it "a flawed fraud. ... painful to watch." Nevertheless, the folks who create newspaper ads for the movie are likely to latch onto Kevin Thomas's in the Los Angeles Times:"The Mod Squad is a great-looking picture that zips along with grace," he writes, "possessed of just enough gravity to allow us to take its people rather than its old TV series premise seriously." |
