Movie reviews don't get a lot worse than the ones being published today about BASEketball, starring Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the creators of Comedy Central's South Park. Jack Mathews writes in Newsday and The Los Angeles Times: "If this movie's a hit, the dumbing-down of America is complete." Gene Siskel in the Chicago Sun Times comments, "Too much of this film is pitched at the level of guys in the back row of homeroom, sticking their hands under their armpits and making farting noises." Steven Rea in the Philadelphia Inquirer also writes off the film as "sophomorically stupid," while Renée Graham in the Boston Globe comments, "Lowbrow doesn't even begin to explain this comedy." Of the major newspaper critics, only one, Stephen Holden of the New York Times no less, has a good word to say for it. BASEketball, says Holden is a "funny, gleefully offensive spoof of professional sports." |
