Janet Maslin in The New York Times calls David Mamet's The Spanish Prisoner the writer-director's "craftiest and most satisfying cinematic puzzle," and she heaps praise on a cast (Campbell Scott, Rebecca Pidgeon, Steve Martin, Ben Gazzara, Ricky Jay) "that never misses a beat of the filmmaker's staccato rhythm." Across town, however, Jami Bernard in the New York Daily News writes: "Enough already with that clipped, formal dialogue; the actors seem like they're fighting the straitjacket of Mamet's stagey, unfamiliar rhythms." (Nevertheless, she says, the film has "hypnotic appeal.") Los Angeles Times critic Kenneth Turan calls the movie another of Mamet's "elegantly mystifying cinematic puzzles." |
