For a family film about a talking bird, Paulie is receiving surprisingly strong reviews, with some critics suggesting that adults may find it more entertaining than children. Jane Horwitz in the Washington Post, in fact, cautions that it's "not for kids under 8 or so because of its serious approach ... [and] mildly crude bits of language." But Lawrence Van Gelder in the New York Times calls Paulie "a warm and witty family film" and says that a song-and-dance act, involving the title character and other aviary friends, is "like the rest of Paulie, ... something to behold." Thelma Adams in the New York Post says the movie is "brimming with warmth and humor" while Philip Wuntch in the Dallas Morning News calls it "a valentine of a movie ... with an edge." Carrie Rickey in the Philadelphia Inquirer writes that the film is a "delightful fable ... that balances its sweetness with vinegary wit." And, pulling out all stops, Bob Heisler comments in the Los Angeles Times that Paulie is "a perfect family movie with the intelligence, humor and hug-me moments to be a great first-date movie, too." |
