Although 20th Century Fox's The Object of My Affection appears to be the movie to beat at the box office this weekend, the gay-straight romance is receiving mixed reviews from critics. USA Today's Susan Wloszczyna faults screenwriter Wendy Wasserstein for failing to make the two lead characters, "the object of our affection -- a fatal flaw." Michael Sullivan in the Washington Post warns that the movie "is not the delightful romantic comedy that the previews would have you believe." Nevertheless, he says, the film delivers a "heartfelt message" about relationships. Janet Maslin in the New York Times calls it "easier to watch than it is to believe." Likewise Judy Gerstel calls the film "consistently entertaining and often quite witty" but says that "it's hard to imagine a mainstream audience knowing what to make of [it]." Jay Carr in the Boston Globe comments that the film does represent "something of a breakthrough in its portrayal of gay characters" and diffidently concludes that "there's much more to like than dislike" in it. On the other hand, Los Angeles Times critic Kenneth Turan writes, "It plays less like a breakthrough than an opportunity lost." |
