Antz, DreamWorks' first computer-generated animated feature, is generating megabytes of conflicting reviews. Several question whom the film will appeal to. But Judy Gerstel in the Toronto Star thinks it will have wide appeal. It is, she writes, "sophisticated enough for worldly grown-ups, simple enough for wide-eyed kids who won't get the jokes but will enjoy the spectacle." Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times also writes that the film "works on different levels for different ages." However, Rita Kempley, writing in the Washington Post, notes that Woody Allen, "as an ant in analysis is frankly more annoying than amusing. ... But then he hasn't got much to work with in this self-serving, product-plugging wisp of a script." Overambition may be the principal problem with the movie, the New York Times' Janet Maslin suggests, questioning the final reel in which the threat of genocide is raised. "Surely a threat of bug spray in the picnic basket could have done the trick," she remarks. And the Los Angeles Times' Kenneth Turan pronounces the film "more impressive than embraceable." On the other hand, Susan Wloszczyna of USA Today calls the film "a splendid beginning for DreamWorks -- and the best Woody Allen movie in ages."
